In situ elemental imaging of planetary surface regolith at a spatial resolution of 100s to 1000s of microns can provide evidence of the provenance of rocks or sediments and their habitability, and can identify post-depositional diagenetic alteration affecting preservation. We use high-resolution elemental maps and XRF spectra from MapX, a flight prototype in situ X-ray imaging instrument, to demonstrate this technology in rock types relevant to astrobiology. Examples are given for various petrologies and depositional/diagenetic environments, including ultramafic/mafic rocks, serpentinites, hydrothermal carbonates, evaporites, stromatolitic cherts and diagenetic concretions.

Good education requires student experiences that deliver lessons about practice as well as theory and that encourage students to work for the public good—especially in the operation of democratic institutions (Dewey 1923; Dewy 1938). We report on an evaluation of the pedagogical value of a research project involving 23 colleges and universities across the country. Faculty trained and supervised students who observed polling places in the 2016 General Election. Our findings indicate that this was a valuable learning experience in both the short and long terms. Students found their experiences to be valuable and reported learning generally and specifically related to course material. Postelection, they also felt more knowledgeable about election science topics, voting behavior, and research methods. Students reported interest in participating in similar research in the future, would recommend other students to do so, and expressed interest in more learning and research about the topics central to their experience. Our results suggest that participants appreciated the importance of elections and their study. Collectively, the participating students are engaged and efficacious—essential qualities of citizens in a democracy.
Influence of Adjuvants and Bromoxynil on Absorption of Clethodim

The effect of nonionic surfactant, crop oil concentrate, organosilicone surfactant, methylated seed oil, and a blend of organosilicone surfactant and methylated seed oil on absorption of 14C-clethodim was evaluated in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Absorption of 14C-label was greatest during the first 40 min after application when 14C-clethodim was applied with methylated seed oil or a blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant. These adjuvants increased the rate of absorption more than crop oil concentrate, organosilicone surfactant, or nonionic surfactant. Crop oil concentrate was more effective than organosilicone or nonionic surfactant in increasing absorption, with nonionic surfactant being more effective than organosilicone surfactant. These results generally agreed with the order of increasing efficacy of clethodim on barnyardgrass as affected by adjuvants in field experiments. Another study was conducted to determine the effect of bromoxynil on absorption and translocation of 14C-clethodim in yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca). Bromoxynil reduced absorption of 14C–clethodim 4, 8, and 24 h after application and also reduced the amount of 14C-label translocated from the treated leaf. These data suggest that antagonism of clethodim control of yellow foxtail by bromoxynil observed in previous research can be attributed partially to decreased absorption and translocation of clethodim.

The effect of ammonium sulfate on absorption of 14C-sethoxydim applied alone and with bentazon was studied in large crabgrass. Adding ammonium sulfate to 14C-sethoxydim increased 14C absorption 6-fold at 0.5 h after application but did not affect the amount of 14C absorbed 1 or 4 h after application. Applying bentazon with 14C-sethoxydim reduced 14C absorption 26%. When 14C-sethoxydim was applied with bentazon and ammonium sulfate, 14C absorption and translocation were similar to those with 14C-sethoxydim alone.
Basis for Antagonism in Mixtures of Bromoxynil Plus Quizalofop-P Applied to Yellow Foxtail (Setaria glauca)

Antagonism of quizalofop-P efficacy on annual grasses by bromoxynil has been noted in both the field and greenhouse. Laboratory experiments were conducted on yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca) to determine the effect of mixing bromoxynil with the ethyl ester of quizalofop-P on absorption, translocation, and metabolism of 14C-quizalofop-P Applying bromoxynil in mixture with quizalofop-P reduced 14C-label absorption from 63 to 51%, 73 to 52%, 77 to 68%, and 90 to 80% at 4, 8, 24, and 96 h after treatment, respectively. Translocation of 14C-label from the treated leaf into the shoot above or shoot below was unaffected by bromoxynil. However, translocation into the roots was reduced from 0.9 to 0.4% and 1.0 to 0.5% at 4 and 8 h after treatment, respectively, but differences were not noted at 0.5, 1, 24, and 96 h after treatment. Bromoxynil increased deesterification of quizalofop-P-ethyl into quizalofop-P acid from 45 to 60% in the shoot above the treated leaf. However, bromoxynil did not affect metabolism of quizalofop-P in the treated leaf or shoot below the treated leaf. These results suggest that antagonism of quizalofop-P activity by bromoxynil is primarily due to decreased absorption of quizalofop-P, whereas effects on translocation and metabolism were minor.

Field experiments were conducted to compare large crabgrass control by clethodim or sethoxydim applied alone and with selected fungicides registered for use in peanut. Fluazinam, propiconazole plus trifloxystrobin, or tebuconazole did not affect efficacy of clethodim or sethoxydim. Azoxystrobin, boscalid, chlorothalonil, and pyraclostrobin reduced efficacy of clethodim and sethoxydim in some experiments. Increasing the herbicide rate increased large crabgrass control regardless of the addition of chlorothalonil. In laboratory experiments, 14C absorption was less when 14C-clethodim or 14C-sethoxydim was applied with chlorothalonil. Pyraclostrobin and tebuconazole did not affect absorption of 14C-clethodim or 14C-sethoxydim.

Summary
The most common cosmetic procedure in the United States currently is treatment with botulinum toxin A. It has been proven as a safe and effective treatment for improvement of glabellar lines. It is also commonly used to treat rhytids in the forehead, periocular, perinasal, periorbital, chin, and platysmal areas, among others. Given its extensive safety history and the use of the material in millions of patients for over twenty years, along with its high satisfaction profile and ease of use, knowledge of this treatment is of paramount importance for practicing aesthetic physicians.
Clostridium botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A), developed and marketed as BOTOX Cosmetic by Allergan Inc., is the first type A botulinum toxin approved in the United States and is supplied as a vacuum-dried powder, 100 units per vial. Of note, different botulinum toxins are defined and treated as different products by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other international regulatory agencies. The FDA does not recognize generic biologics (such as botulinum toxins) because the different manufacturing processes alter the final products significantly. Units of BOTOX Cosmetic are not interchangeable with units of other types of botulinum toxin, and there is no recognized conversion factor between different types of botulinum toxin. This is clear since the dose response curves of different toxins are not parallel to each other and the optimal ratio between products appears to be different for different indications. Unreconstituted BOTOX Cosmetic should be stored at 2–8 degrees Celsius.

Trigonometric parallaxes have been measured by Dahn et al. (2002) for 28 cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs, including 17 L dwarfs and three T dwarfs. Broadband CCD and near-IR photometry (VRIz*JHK) have been obtained for these objects and for 24 additional late-type dwarfs. These data have been supplemented with astrometry and photometry from the literature, including parallaxes for the brighter companions of ten L and two T dwarfs. The absolute magnitudes and colors are reviewed here. The I - J color and the spectral type are both good predictors of absolute magnitude for late-M and L dwarfs. MJ becomes monotonically fainter with I - J color and with spectral type through late-L dwarfs, then brightens for early-T dwarfs. In contrast, the J - K color correlates poorly with absolute magnitude for L dwarfs. Using several other parameters from the literature (Li detection, Hα emission strength, projected rotation velocity, and tangential velocity), we fail to uncover any measurable parameter that correlates with the anomalous J - K color.

Hsp70 molecular chaperones contain three distinct structural domains, a 44 kDa N-terminal ATPase domain, a 17 kDa peptide-binding domain, and a 10 kDa C-terminal domain. The ATPase and peptide binding domains are conserved in sequence and are functionally well characterized. The function of the 10 kDa variable C-terminal domain is less well understood. We have characterized the secondary structure and dynamics of the C-terminal domain from the Escherichia coli Hsp70, DnaK, in solution by high-resolution NMR. The domain was shown to be comprised of a rigid structure consisting of four helices and a flexible C-terminal subdomain of approximately 33 amino acids. The mobility of the flexible region is maintained in the context of the full-length protein and does not appear to be modulated by the nucleotide state. The flexibility of this region appears to be a conserved feature of Hsp70 architecture and may have important functional implications. We also developed a method to analyze 15N nuclear spin relaxation data, which allows us to extract amide bond vector directions relative to a unique diffusion axis. The extracted angles and rotational correlation times indicate that the helices form an elongated, bundle-like structure in solution.
